Subhash Chandra Reddy is a social worker dedicated to water resource conservation. As the driving force behind SMARAN, an environmental and developmental organization established in 1997, he focuses on community welfare, particularly in the Hyderabad, Ranga Reddy, Medak, and Nalgonda Districts of Telangana.
SMARAN has undertaken various initiatives, including micro watershed development, nursery raising, compost making, and renovating tanks and check dams in rural areas. Reddy's efforts extend to addressing issues like depleting groundwater tables in Hyderabad and surrounding districts. Recognizing the challenges posed by increasing bore well depths over the past 30 years, he champions the Inverse Bore Well Rainwater Harvesting (IBW RWH) method. Reddy tirelessly promotes awareness and sustainability among urban communities and rural farmers, emphasizing the need to preserve bore wells and recharge deep aquifers.
Over the past decade, approximately 1000 abandoned or defunct bore wells have been revitalized, showcasing his commitment to improving groundwater quantity and quality. Reddy's holistic approach involves customizing rainwater structures based on site-specific needs, reflecting his profound connection to the cosmic elements of the earth. Through SMARAN, he actively implements economic rainwater harvesting solutions to protect and replenish groundwater sources, advancing his vision of a freshwater resource-rich earth.
